America has made great strides in the area of racial equality. From affirmative action in schools and employment, we’ve helped further our egalitarian dreams. However there is one area that hasn’t been thoroughly examined yet; sports. In 2014, the NFL players comprised of 67% African-Americans and just 31% Caucasians, whereas in the United States the population consists of about 70% whites and 12% blacks. The NBA is even worse where 72% of the players are black and only 20% are white. This flies in the face of the equality we have been trying to achieve; whites are significantly underrepresented in not only football, but basketball as well.
In an age where we have established that all people are equal, it is disheartening to see areas in American society where there is no equality and skin color still matters. If we are all equal, whites should not be so underrepresented in these areas. This problem needs to be tackled and we must raise awareness about the racial unfairness in major league football and basketball.
To solve this problem, affirmative action must be expanded to sports to keep the race distribution at similar levels in sports as on the national level because at its current level it is unacceptable. At the bare minimum whites in football and basketball should be increased to about 50-60% of the players to more closely represent their ratio in the nation. Until this is done, we should not support the activities these organizations.
Let’s bring equality to all aspects of America.
